Minneapolis Man Pleads Guilty to Robbing St. Louis Park Bank

U.S. Attorney’s Office May 20, 2010
  • District of Minnesota (612) 664-5600

A 28-year-old Minneapolis man pleaded guilty today in federal court in Minneapolis to robbing a Wells Fargo bank in St. Louis Park on March 3, 2010. Appearing before United States District Court Judge Ann D. Montgomery, David Kim Carroll pleaded guilty to one count of bank robbery. He was indicted on April 5, 2010.

In his plea agreement, Carroll admitted stealing $15,525 from the bank. Admittedly, he entered the bank on March 3, walked up to a personal banker, and asked if he could talk about investments. The banker met with Carroll for about 10 minutes, after which Carroll confessed he actually was there to commit robbery. Carroll then ordered access to the vault. The banker explained that the bank manager alone had such access, at which point, Carroll displayed the end of what appeared to be a gun.

The banker, in turn, took Carroll to see the bank manager. Upon entering the manager’s office, Carroll threatened to kill everyone in the bank if his demands where not met or if either banker attempted to sound the alarm. As a result, the bank manager accepted the duffle bag that Carroll handed to him and entered the vault by himself, supposedly to fill the bag with money.

Once inside the vault, however, the bank manager used his cell phone to contact the bank’s security company and inform them of the robbery. After that, he put some cash in the duffle bag and returned to his office, where he gave the bag back to Carroll. Then Carroll took the manager’s car keys and fled the scene in the manager’s vehicle.

A short time later, police spotted the vehicle and attempted to stop it, but Carroll refused to yield. Instead, he led the officers on a chase until the vehicle he was driving struck another before coming to a stop in an apartment complex parking lot about two miles from the bank. Carroll immediately fled on foot but was apprehended without incident after being tracked down by a police canine.

Following Carroll’s arrest, officers reportedly recovered a duffle bag containing $15,500. Along the path between the abandoned car and the arrest site, police also recovered an air pistol and clothing that matched what had been worn by the robber.

For his crime, Carroll faces a potential maximum penalty of 20 years in prison. Judge Montgomery will determine his sentence at a future hearing, yet to be scheduled.

This case is the result of an investigation by the St. Louis Park Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with assistance from the Edina Police Department and the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office. It is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeffrey S. Paulsen.
