Mandaree Man Sentenced for Assault

BISMARCK—Acting United States Attorney Lynn Jordheim announced that on February 25, 2010, Corey Goodiron, 23, of Mandaree, North Dakota, was sentenced before United States District Court Daniel L. Hovland to two years and six months in prison on a charge of assault with a dangerous weapon.

Judge Hovland further ordered two years of supervised release, restitution of $5384.17 and a $100 special assessment paid to the Crime Victim’s Fund. Goodiron pleaded guilty to the charge on December 7, 2009.

On July 15, 2009, in the Mandaree area on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation, Goodiron was driving around with his cousin consuming alcohol. Goodiron and his cousin got into an argument and the cousin was ordered out of the car. The cousin was picked up by two females as he was walking, but Goodiron returned and called the cousin out of that car. When the cousin got out, Goodiron began to wrestle with him and hit him with fists multiple times. After the victim was knocked to the ground, Goodiron grabbed the victim’s head with both hands and smashed his head into the highway pavement three times. Goodiron continued to hit and kick the victim telling him he would not stop until the victim gave up. Goodiron dragged the victim into the ditch and kicked him in the head multiple times. The victim suffered a closed head injury and had a broken tooth and was hospitalized.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Three Affiliated Tribes Police Department.

Assistant United States Attorney Rick Volk prosecuted the case.
