Minneapolis Man Admits Attempting to Rob Burnsville Bank

U.S. Attorney’s Office October 30, 2009
  • District of Minnesota (612) 664-5600

A 37-year-old Minneapolis man pleaded guilty today in federal court to attempting to rob an Associated Bank in Burnsville on July 16, 2009. Carnovsky Deshawn Franklin pled guilty to one count of attempted bank robbery in St. Paul before United States District Court Judge Donovan Frank. Franklin was indicted on August 11, 2009.

In his plea agreement, Franklin admitted casing a Wells Fargo bank in south Minneapolis and the Associated Bank and determined the Burnsville bank would be easier to rob because it had fewer employees and guards. Franklin asked someone to drive him to a beauty supply store to purchase gloves and he wrote a note stating, “Put the money in the bag, don’t play.”

Franklin was arrested at 1:30 p.m. while approaching the Associated Bank and was carrying the demand note, an empty plastic bag and a pair of gloves. According to a Federal Bureau of Investigation affidavit, authorities learned that Franklin was planning to rob three or four banks and began surveillance of him.

Franklin faces a potential maximum penalty of 20 years in prison for his crime. Judge Frank will determine his sentence at a future date. This case is the result of an investigation by the FBI and the Burnsville Police Department. It is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Kimberly A. Svendsen.
