Minneapolis Man Indicted for Attempted Bank Robbery

A 36-year-old Minneapolis man was indicted yesterday in federal court for allegedly attempting to rob an Associated Bank in Burnsville on July 16.

Carnovsky Deshawn Franklin was charged with one count of attempted bank robbery. His indictment alleges that he attempted by force, violence and intimidation to take money from the bank, located at 2999 County Road 42.

According to a Federal Bureau of Investigation affidavit, authorities learned that Franklin was planning to rob three or four banks and began surveillance of him. On July 16, officers observed Franklin enter and subsequently leave a Wells Fargo Bank in south Minneapolis after less than five minutes.

Then officers observed Franklin enter the Associated Bank and subsequently leave after less than five minutes. Franklin returned at 1:30 p.m., parked his vehicle on a street and walked toward the bank. Officers arrested Franklin without incident in the bank parking lot.

Police found on Franklin a demand note that stated, “Put the money in the bag, don’t play,” an empty white plastic bag and a pair of white gloves.

If convicted, Franklin faces a potential maximum penalty of 20 years in prison. All sentences are determined by a federal district court judge. This case is the result of an investigation by the FBI and the Burnsville Police Department. It is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Kimberly A. Svendsen.
