Inver Grove Heights Man Arrested for Bank Robbery

Ralph S. Boelter, Special Agent in Charge of the Minneapolis FBI office, today, announced the federal arrest of Samuel Jay Ewing, age 28, of Chicago.  On Thursday, March 26, 2008, at approximately 10:20 am, the Heartland Credit Union located at 5500 South Robert Trail, Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota, was robbed by a lone individual brandishing a handgun.  Shortly after the robbery, a West St Paul police officer spotted the robber as he was attempting a getaway in a stolen Dodge pickup truck.  While attempting to flee, the robber, later identified as Ewing, crashed the truck on Upper 55th Street.  He attempted to flee the scene on foot and was apprehended, with a bag containing cash, after a brief chase.  A silver handgun was subsequently found near where Ewing was arrested. 

On Thursday, March 26, 2009, a federal criminal complaint was filed in United States District Court, District of Minnesota, St Paul, Minnesota, charging Samuel Jay Ewing with bank robbery for the alleged March 26, 2009, robbery of the Heartland Credit Union located at 5500 South Robert Trail, Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota.  On Friday, March 27, 2009, Ewing made his Initial Appearance in United States District Court, St Paul at 2:00 pm.  He was ordered detained pending a detention hearing scheduled for 3:30 pm on Tuesday, March 31, 2009.

This investigation is a joint effort by the Inver Grove Heights Police Department, the West St Paul Police Department and the FBI.  The United States Attorney’s Office, District of Minnesota is prosecuting this case.
