Two Men Sentenced for Robbing Waunakee Credit Union

MADISON, WI—John W. Vaudreuil, United States Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin, announced that U.S. District Judge Barbara B. Crabb sentenced two men this week for robbing the Summit Credit Union in Waunakee, Wisconsin on August 29, 2011.

Yesterday, Judge Crabb sentenced Tyree Anthony Walker, 33, Madison, Wisconsin, to 151 months in prison for his role in the robbery. Walker pled guilty to bank robbery on February 17, 2012. Today, Judge Crabb sentenced Gregory Calvin Taylor, 41, Fitchburg, Wisconsin, to 235 months in prison for the robbery and for possessing a firearm as a felon.

At Taylor’s sentencing hearing, defense counsel requested the court impose a concurrent sentence to Taylor’s pending Wisconsin parole revocation sentence. According to counsel, Taylor is facing a mandatory 14-year sentence on his Wisconsin parole revocation. Judge Crabb denied defense counsel’s request and ordered Taylor’s 235-month federal prison sentence to be served consecutive to his Wisconsin parole revocation sentence.

The facts adduced during the plea and sentencing hearings showed that on August 29, 2011, Taylor entered the Summit Credit Union in Waunakee wearing a ski mask and carrying a gun. A customer was attempting to leave the credit union, but Taylor forced him to return at gunpoint. Taylor then jumped the teller counter and proceeded to steal money from the teller drawers. Taylor then left the credit union and entered the getaway car driven by Walker.

The pair were spotted by law enforcement driving away from Waunakee, and Walker led the police on a high-speed, 10-mile chase, with speeds in excess of 100 mph, on the West Beltline Highway. Walker exited the Beltline, and then both Walker and Taylor ran from the stopped vehicle. Law enforcement pursued the defendants on foot and apprehended both after a brief chase.

The charges against Taylor and Walker were the result of an investigation conducted by the Waunakee Police Department, Dane County Sheriff’s Department, Madison Police Department, and Federal Bureau of Investigation. The prosecution of the case has been handled by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Timothy M. O’Shea and Munish Sharda.
