Federal Grand Jury Returns Indictments

A federal grand jury in the Western District of Wisconsin sitting in Madison returned the following indictments today. You are advised that a charge is merely an accusation and that a defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

Madison Man Charged with Stealing Firearms from Gun Shop

Daniel Barlow, 22, Madison, Wisconsin, is charged with stealing firearms, being a felon in possession of firearms, and transporting a stolen firearm in interstate commerce. The indictment alleges that Barlow stole 20 firearms from Grampa’s Gun Shop on Williamson Street, Madison, on March 13, 2010. The indictment alleges that he stole 16 handguns, a shotgun, and three rifles. He is also charged with transporting one of the stolen handguns from Wisconsin to Minnesota between March 13 and April 4, 2010.

If convicted, Barlow faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in federal prison on each count. The charges against him are the result of an investigation by the Madison Police Department and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The prosecution of this case has been assigned to Assistant U.S. Attorney Rita M. Rumbelow.

Madison Man Faces Counterfeiting Charges

Luke Medis, 24, Madison, Wisconsin, is charged with counterfeiting U.S. currency, andattempting to pass counterfeited currency. The indictment alleges that he counterfeited 10-dollar and 20-dollar Federal Reserve Notes on March 23, 2010. The indictment also charges him with attempting to pass two counterfeit bills to a cab driver in Madison in March 2010, and one counterfeit bill to a Madison restaurant in April 2010.

If convicted, Medis faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison on each count. The charges against him are the result of an investigation by the Madison Police Department and U.S. Secret Service. The prosecution of this case has been assigned to Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert A. Anderson.

Madison Man Charged with Forging Checks

Joseph R. Harrington, 48, Madison, Wisconsin, is charged with eight counts of forging a security of an organization. The indictment alleges that in 2005, while Harrington was an officer and employee of Wisconsin Management Company, Inc. (WMCI), he obtained from WMCI checks made out to a third party, falsely endorsed the check with the name of the third party, and deposited the proceeds into his personal business bank account. The indictment alleges that he forged eight checks, for a total of $58,410.

If convicted, Harrington faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in federal prison on each count. The charges against him are the result of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The prosecution of this case has been assigned to Assistant U.S. Attorney Laura Przybylinski Finn.

La Crosse Man Charged with Illegally Possessing Firearm

Xiong K. Yang, 49, La Crosse, Wisconsin, is charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm. The indictment alleges that on September 14, 2008, he possessed a .22 caliber rifle.

If convicted, Yang faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in federal prison. The charge against him is the result of an investigation by the Fort McCoy Police Department and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The prosecution of this case has been assigned to Assistant U.S. Attorney Elizabeth Altman.
