Fort Lauderdale Armed Robber Sentenced

Wifredo A. Ferrer, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida; John V. Gillies, Special Agent in Charge, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Miami Field Office; and Al Lamberti, Sheriff, Broward Sheriff’s Office, announced yesterday’s sentencing of Luke Singletary, 21, of Fort Lauderdale, dubbed the “Saggy Pants Robber.” Singletary was sentenced on 12 counts of robbery affecting interstate commerce, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 1951(a); one count of attempted robbery affecting interstate commerce, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 1951(a); and one count of using a firearm in furtherance of a robbery affecting interstate commerce, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 924(c). U.S. District Court Judge William J. Zloch sentenced Singletary to a total of 26 years’ imprisonment.
On February 3, 2011, Singletary pled guilty to the following robberies:
(1) the March 18, 2009 robbery of the Midway Food Store, Hallandale, Florida;
(2) the March 22, 2009 robbery of the Kentucky Fried Chicken, Pompano Beach, Florida;
(3) the March 25, 2009 robbery of the Hollywood Food Mart, Hollywood, Florida;
(4) the March 31, 2009 robbery of the 7-Eleven Store, Pompano Beach, Florida;
(5) the April 4, 2009 robbery of the 7-Eleven, Hollywood, Florida;
(6) the April 4, 2009 robbery of the 7-Eleven Store, Deerfield Beach, Florida;
(7) the April 4, 2009 robbery of the 7-Eleven Store, Fort Lauderdale, Florida;
(8) the April 6, 2009 robbery of the Hollywood Food Mart, Hollywood, Florida;
(9) the April 9, 2009 robbery of the 7-Eleven Store, Pembroke Pines, Florida;
(10) the April 10, 2009 robbery of the 7-Eleven Store, Miramar, Florida;
(11) the April 10, 2009 robbery of the 7-Eleven Store, Pompano Beach, Florida; and
(12) the April 17, 2009 attempted robbery of the Circle K Store, Hollywood, Florida.
In addition, Singletary pled guilty to using a firearm in furtherance of the March 18, 2009, robbery of the Midway Food Store, 1050 North Federal Highway, Hallandale, Florida.
According to the factual proffer filed during the plea, between March 18, 2009 and April 16, 2009, Singletary and his co-defendant, Terrence Williams, committed 13 armed robberies of convenience stores, markets, and restaurants. For each robbery, Singletary entered the targeted establishment wearing a mask, brandished or pointed a 9 millimeter handgun at victims, and demanded money and other items. Singletary specifically brandished a firearm during the robbery that occurred on March 18, 2009. Co-defendant Williams commonly served as the getaway driver, although he entered the Midway Food Store to assist in the March 18, 2009 robbery. Singeltary and Williams were arrested as they tried to flee on April 17, 2009 when law enforcement officer disrupted the attempted robbery of a Circle K Store located at 3990 W. Hallandale Beach Boulevard, Hollywood, Florida.
Co-defendant Williams pled guilty on January 27, 2010 and was sentenced on April 23, 2010 to 180 months in federal prison.
