Broward Man Indicted for Impersonating FBI Agent and Possessing Federal Badges and Identification

Wifredo A. Ferrer, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, and John V. Gillies, Special Agent in Charge, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Miami Field Office, announced today’s indictment of defendant Daniel F. Cleary, 48, of Weston, Florida.

More specifically, the 34-count indictment charges Cleary with two counts of impersonating an FBI special agent and 32 counts of possession of federal agency badges and credentials, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Sections 912 and 701. If convicted, Cleary faces up to three years’ imprisonment on each count of impersonation and six months’ imprisonment on each count of possession of federal agency badges and credentials.

Mr. Ferrer thanked the FBI and the Broward County Sheriff’s Office for their work on this investigation. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas Lanigan.

An indictment is only an accusation, and defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
