Fort Campbell Civilian Sentenced for Assault of an Infant

U.S. Attorney’s Office July 15, 2009
  • Western District of Kentucky (502) 582-5911

PADUCAH, KY—Stephanie Johnson, age 26, of Clarksville, Tennessee, in Montgomery County, was sentenced to five years’ probation by Chief Judge Thomas B. Russell in United States District Court, Paducah, Kentucky, for assault of a person under 16 years of age, Acting U.S. Attorney Candace G. Hill of the Western District of Kentucky announced today.

Johnson had pled guilty on March 11, 2009, and admitted that on May 17, 2008, in her residence on the Fort Campbell, Kentucky military base, she intentionally struck a two-month old infant in the head on several occasions, and forcefully placed the infant on a bed near a wall, resulting in a traumatic brain injury and swelling, bilateral skull fractures, seizure activity, and bleeding into the right retina. The infant was also diagnosed with multiple rib fractures, and fractures of areas of the right and left legs. Johnson also admitted that on May 17, 2008, she maneuvered the infant into a sitting position, which would be consistent with causing the other skeletal fractures. On May 18, 2008, the infant was taken to the Blanchfield Army Community Hospital emergency room on Fort Campbell, and later transported to the Vanderbilt University Medical Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee. The infant remained hospitalized in Vanderbilt Hospital until about May 31, 2008.

Evidence indicated that the infant has made a reasonably good recovery. The infant has been allowed to return to the family following extensive counseling and evaluations.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney David Sparks, and it was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Fort Campbell Criminal Investigation Division.
