Laura A. Bucheit Named Special Agent in Charge of Las Vegas Division

Director Robert S. Mueller, III has named Laura A. Bucheit special agent in charge of the FBI’s Las Vegas Division. Ms. Bucheit most recently served as the Director’s special assistant at FBI Headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Ms. Bucheit began her career as an FBI special agent in February 1996. She first reported to the Baltimore Division where she conducted investigations into terrorism, weapons of mass destruction, and criminal violations. In addition, while assigned to the division, she worked in an undercover capacity to successfully infiltrate a criminal enterprise of motorcycle gangs involved in a large-scale, multi-jurisdictional distribution of methamphetamine throughout the southeastern United States. She was also the Baltimore Division’s first female SWAT team member and the second certified female sniper in FBI history. In January 2003, she was promoted to supervisory special agent at FBI Headquarters to provide guidance and oversight of the FBI’s Criminal Undercover Program.

In January 2005, Ms. Bucheit transferred to the Las Vegas Division to oversee all FBI international and domestic terrorism investigations in the state of Nevada. As the supervisory special agent of the Joint Terrorism Task Force, Ms. Bucheit was responsible for coordinating the efforts of 48 members representing 26 federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies.

In September 2007, Ms. Bucheit returned to FBI Headquarters to serve in the Inspection Division. In January 2009, she was promoted to assistant special agent in charge of the San Francisco Division with oversight responsibility for all criminal programs. In February 2010, she was appointed special assistant to Director Mueller.

Prior to her appointment to the FBI, Ms. Bucheit was an officer with the San Diego Police Department for five years. In addition, Ms. Bucheit was employed as a contract performance consultant at the Naval Special Warfare Center Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S) Training Center in Coronado, California.
