LAS VEGAS, NV—Fifth-graders at J.G. Johnson Elementary School in Pahrump, Nye County, Nevada, have earned the FBI-SOS (Safe Online Surfing) Internet Challenge National Championship for the month of December 2010.

The school will receive their FBI-SOS National Trophy and a visit from the FBI during an assembly on February 8, 2011 at 1:15 p.m. J.G. Johnson Elementary School is located at 900 Jackrabbit Street Pahrump, Nevada, 59048.

Under the guidance of teacher Jeanette Ogden, the group of fifth-graders produced the highest cumulative results of any participating school in the nation on the FBI-SOS Internet Challenge post-quiz. J.G. Johnson Elementary School is the first Nevada school to earn this prestigious award.

The FBI-SOS Internet Challenge is a free program that delivers critical Internet safety information in a fun, competitive format to students in grades three through eight, with a separate monthly challenge for each grade level. The goal of the program is to provide students with knowledge about how to avoid dangerous situations on the Internet, specifically Internet predators. It was developed by the FBI and the Fischler School of Education and Human Services at Nova Southeastern University. The program is open to public and private schools and is designed to meet state and federal Internet safety mandates.

Each month, students from registered schools take an online pre-quiz, learn about Internet safety in the scavenger hunt, and then take an online post-quiz. At the end of each month, six trophies (one for each grade level) are awarded to the schools with the highest scoring students on the FBI-SOS post-quiz.

To date, approximately 91,000 school students in 41 states have participated in the FBI-SOS Internet Challenge. For more information about the FBI-SOS program, please contact Community Outreach Specialist Holly James with the FBI in Las Vegas at (702) 584-5678.
