  • Public Affairs Specialist Joyce McCants (865) 544-0751

At approximately 11:15 a.m. today, law enforcement officers with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Knoxville Police Department (KPD), and the Knox County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) arrested Sammy Gibson, age 25, in Seymour, Tennessee, for his role in the robbery of the Oak Ridge National Lab (ORNL) Federal Credit Union, which occurred on August 24, 2013.

Gibson is charged with assisting Jason Ronald Brown, who was previously arrested on August 28, 2013.

On August 24, 2013, a subject entered the ORNL Federal Credit Union, at 5505 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, Tennessee, threatened to have a bomb and demanded money. Upon obtaining money from the credit union, the subject left a package, later determined to be a hoax device, and fled.

The arrest today was the result of a joint investigation by the FBI Safe Streets Task Force (SSTF), composed of the FBI, KPD, and KCSO; and the KPD Major Crimes Unit and the Blount County Sheriff’s Office.

All defendants are presumed innocent unless or until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
