GREENEVILLE, TN—Mark Slone, 44, of Russellville, Tenn., was sentenced on April 4, 2011, to 24 months in prison by the Honorable J. Ronnie Greer, U.S. District Judge, in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee at Greeneville. The sentence was the result of a guilty plea by Slone on November 10, 2010, to an information charging him with the unlawful possession of stolen explosive materials. Slone was also ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation, pay a $100 assessment, and serve three years’ supervised release after completion of his prison term. Judge Greer also recommended that Slone complete a substance abuse treatment while he is in custody.

Slone was employed by Nyrstar Mine in Jefferson County, Tenn., and stole eight chubs of Senatel Ultrex high explosive emulsion gel. An undercover informant conducted a taped purchase of explosives from Slone, who smuggled the explosives out of the mine in his lunch bucket.

U.S. Attorney Bill Killian said, “ I want to thank the various city, county, state, and federal agencies for their cooperative efforts which resulted in the conviction and sentence of this defendant. We stay concerned about the dissemination of explosive material into our society by those who illegally obtain it and plan to use it for illegal purposes. Hopefully, this sentence will notify others of the risk they take in obtaining, possessing, and distributing explosive materials illegally. “

The charges and subsequent conviction of Slone were the result of an investigation conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Morristown Police Department, Hamblen County Sheriff’s Department, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department, and Fourth Judicial District Drug Task Force. Helen Smith, Assistant United States Attorney, represented the United States.
