Hello
everyone! My name is Kurt, and I work as an Explosive Detection
Dog here in Washington, D.C. at FBI Headquarters! My daddy was a
Golden
Retriever and my mom was a black Labrador. I guess I take after
my mom in color but I have a long coat like my daddy!
I was originally
trained to be a Seeing Eye Dog, but I showed that I have a knack
for
detecting explosives. I spent several weeks at the
Canine Training Center in Front Royal, Virginia, before I met
my human partner, Joel. Joel and I spent almost ten weeks together
learning
how to work as a team. We continue to work and train every day
and we are always together. We work together to find bombs, explosives,
guns, and ammunition that are hidden and could hurt people. Whenever
I sense an explosive odor I show Joel where it is, and then I
am given
a special dog treat! I like working hard and helping to keep
our country safe!
I do not work all
the time though. I get to have fun
and
play with my other dog friends who work at the same building
I do. I like to
chase after tennis balls, Kongs, and anything else that bounces.
My favorite activities are swimming and visiting my “brother
dogs” Wally
and Dustin—they are Labradors too. Joel’s wife, Ashley,
spoils me, and we play fetch outside with my soccer ball. My
best dog buddies, Chloe and Isabel, like to visit me and we have
fun together
running around the yard.
Sometimes I get
to do demonstrations for people
so they can watch me in action. I like to meet new people,
especially kids, so if you
are ever in Washington, D.C. and you come by FBI Headquarters,
be sure to look out for me or the other Explosive Detection
Dogs and
say hello!
I would love to meet you!
