Federal Inmate Indicted for Murder Attempt

U.S. Attorney’s Office March 31, 2009
  • Western District of Missouri (816) 426-3122

SPRINGFIELD, MO—Matt J. Whitworth, Acting United States Attorney for the Western District of Missouri, announced that an inmate at the U.S. Medical Center for Federal Prisoners in Springfield, Mo., was indicted by a federal grand jury today for assaulting another inmate in a murder attempt.

Rusty Rex Rean, also known as “Starface,” 29, was charged in an indictment returned by a federal grand jury in Springfield.

Today’s indictment alleges that Rean assaulted another inmate at the medical center by stabbing him with a sharpened metal rod on Feb. 17, 2009. The shank, according to the indictment, was approximately seven inches long.

Whitworth cautioned that the charge contained in this indictment is simply an accusation, and not evidence of guilt. Evidence supporting the charge must be presented to a federal trial jury, whose duty is to determine guilt or innocence.

This case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Steven M. Mohlhenrich. It was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
