Activity in Federal Court – South Bend

SOUTH BEND, IN—The United States Attorney’s Office announced the following activity in federal court:

Michael Kellybrew, 24, of South Bend, Indiana, pled guilty before Magistrate Judge Christopher Neuchterlein to count two of an indictment charging him with unlawful transport of firearms. These charges were filed as the result of an investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives and the Elkhart Police Department. This case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney John Maciejczyk.

Amador Avelino, 28, of Elkhart, Indiana, pled guilty before Magistrate Judge Christopher Neuchterlein to count one of an indictment charging him with re-entry of a deported alien. These charges were filed as the result of an investigation by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Office of Homeland Security Investigations and the Elkhart Police Department. This case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney William Grimmer.

Jacques Thomas, 24, of South Bend, Indiana, was sentenced by Judge Robert Miller, Jr. to 21 months’ imprisonment and two years of supervised release after pleading guilty to count one of an indictment charging him with being an unlawful user of a controlled substance (mairjuana) in possession of a firearm. This case was the result of an investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. This case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Donald Schmid.

Armand White, 23, of South Bend, Indiana, was sentenced by Judge Robert Miller, Jr. to 126 months’ imprisonment and three years of supervised release after pleading guilty to counts one and two of an indictment charging him with the bank robbery of Teacher’s Credit Union while armed with a deadly weapon and carrying a firearm during a crime of violence. White was ordered to pay $65,113.85 in restitution. This case was the result of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. This case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Frank Schaffer.

John Brown, 43, of South Bend, Indiana, was sentenced by Judge Robert Miller, Jr. to 30 months’ imprisonment and four years of supervised release after pleading guilty to count one of an indictment charging him with drug trafficking (cocaine). This case was the result of an investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration. This case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Frank Schaffer.

Dennis Lavengood, 24, of Winamac, Indiana, was sentenced by Judge Robert Miller, Jr. to 21 months' imprisonment and three years of supervised release after pleading guilty to count one of an indictment charging him with being a felon in possession of a firearm. This case was the result of an investigation by Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. This case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Frank Schaffer.

Luis Benitez, 32, of Warsaw, Indiana, was sentenced by Judge Robert Miller, Jr. to 97 months’ imprisonment and four years of supervised release after pleading guilty to count two of an indictment charging him with drug trafficking (methamphetamine). This case was the result of an investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration. This case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Frank Schaffer.
