FBI Laboratory Specialized Training Program Student Instructions
The FBI Laboratory Specialized Training Program offers courses in many areas of forensic science. Courses are designed for and open to U.S. law enforcement agencies, government crime laboratories and military personnel. International students must be employed by similar government agencies. International students must consult with their respective FBI Legal Attaché office prior to applying so that an application may be sent on their behalf. Interested students should review the current Schedule and Course Descriptions that will help to identify courses that best fit their skills, experience, interests, and the needs of their organizations.
The application process includes the following:
Step 1) Mandatory - Complete a Laboratory Specialized Training Program Application
Once the student has completed the Training Application Form (pdf) included on the Laboratory Training web site, select the “E-mail Application” button on the bottom of the form to electronically submit it to the Laboratory Training Group. Applications via fax will not be accepted. Print a copy of the application for your records prior to closing the application.
Note: The form requires the use of Adobe Acrobat Reader. If the Adobe tool is not loaded on your system, it is available as a free download from http://www.adobe.com/acrobat
Please contact the Laboratory Training Group at FBILabTraining@ic.fbi.gov with any questions or if you are experiencing problems with the application process. Applications are accepted throughout the year and selected students are notified approximately 30-45 days prior to the start of each course.
Step 2) Optional - Complete the FBI Virtual Academy (FBIVA) Registration/Enrollment
(This step is only required for students who wish to receive FBIVA course credit).
The FBIVA Registration system is used to maintain individual training histories, generate reports, and provide enrollment updates. Students who wish to receive FBIVA course credit should complete the FBIVA registration process. All applicants and their respective organizations must establish an FBIVA account prior to requesting course enrollment.
Access the FBI Virtual Academy internet link or type the following URL: https://fbiva.fbiacademy.edu (FBI employees or those who have access to the intranet must use the FBI Virtual Academy on the classified system).
Complete Agency Registration (only required if agency has not previously registered in the FBIVA) – Only employees of validated agencies will be able to register as users/students of the FBI Virtual Academy. If the student’s agency does not already have an FBI Virtual Academy account, the agency must first apply and be validated by the FBIVA administrators. The Agency Application should be submitted by the agency’s training manager or the person who will serve as the agency’s point of contact for all FBI training matters.
Your agency’s training manager can click on the Agency Registration link on the FBIVA login page and follow the instructions provided on each screen. When your agency is validated, the agency training manager will receive an e-mail from the FBIVA system. Once an agency is validated, individuals within that agency may register for an FBIVA account. The agency’s training manager must validate the user’s registration for access to the FBIVA system.
Complete User Registration (only required if you have not previously registered in FBIVA) – If you are not already an FBIVA user, please complete the User Registration within the FBIVA prior to enrolling in a course. Please click on the User Registration link on the FBIVA login page. Follow the instructions provided on each screen.
The User Registration will be validated by the agency’s training manager. The length of this process will vary from hours to days depending on the availability of your agency’s training manager. Students will receive an e-mail from the FBIVA system notifying them when their registration has been approved by their agency’s training manager.
Complete Course Enrollment – Once you have access to the FBIVA, log into the system and select the link for the Course Catalog. Search for the course and click on the TCI icon next to the course title. Under the course description in the right window pane, select the Request Enrollment link and follow the screen prompts.
Please contact the FBI Virtual Academy Support team at virtualacademy@fbiacademy.edu with any FBIVA questions or if you are experiencing problems with the system.
Thank you for your interest in the FBI Laboratory Specialized Training Program.
