
Firearms and Toolmarks Examiner

Qualifications include the following:
- BS in science preferred
- Knowledge of firearms, ammunition, and microscopy
- At least three years' experience as a recognized firearms and toolmarks examiner expert
- Experience in testifying as a firearms expert in a court of law
- Knowledge and experience with the identification and comparison of firearms, ammunition, and ammunition components; laboratory techniques used in the analysis of firearms and ammunition; chemical tests for distance determination; serial number restoration; and applying the principles of external and terminal ballistics to crime scenes
- Knowledge and experience with the IBIS system and laboratory and firearms safety
Responsibilities include the following:
- Performing laboratory and field work involving firearms and toolmarks and related evidentiary examinations
- Examining and identifying firearms, cartridges, bullets, and similar evidence in criminal investigation
- Performing on-scene evidentiary searches at major or difficult crime scenes
- Collecting physical evidence at crime scenes
- Providing expert testimony on general firearms capability and examination methodology
- Entering and correlating IBIS entries
- Performing related work as required
