Russian Icon
On August 27, 1998,
St. George's Episcopal Church in Schenectady, New
York, reported the theft of a valuable 15th-century
Russian Icon. The painting is done on an inch-thick
piece of curved wood with a brownish-gold background.
It depicts the Virgin Mary holding the baby Jesus
with the infant's head resting on Mary's cheek and
his hand touching her chin. Both images have golden
halos and their garments are painted in white, orange,
yellow, green and blue. The painting was hanging
approximately six feet off the ground in a passageway
between a small chapel and the church nave. It was
acquired by a parishioner in Russia during the early
1990's and donated to the church in 1996.
