Countdown to FBI Internet Safety Awards

Charlene Thornton, Special Agent in Charge of the Honolulu Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), is inviting local and national media to the 2010 Internet Safety Awards in Honolulu, Hawaii on April 16, 2010.

Established in 2007, the Internet Safety Awards (ISA) is an FBI community outreach program in collaboration with the Hawaii Chapter of Infragard. The ISA contest solicits video public service announcements (PSAs) from Hawaii students (grades 5-12) on topics of Internet safety and the ethical use of technology. This year, 218 students representing 18 schools from across the state of Hawaii submitted 59 PSAs as entries.

Topics addressed by this year’s entries include: sexting, cyberbullying, plagiarism, digital piracy, social networking safety, and online predators.

Serving as judges are a panel of experts in the areas of education, media, pop culture, and Internet safety including:

  • Prof. Robert Hochstein, Leeward Community College
  • MaryAnn Sacharski, Oceanic Cable
  • Brenda Salgado, KGMB-9 Television
  • Hilary Apana-McKee, State Department of Education
  • Dr. Thanh Truc Nguyen, University of Hawaii
  • Chauncey Tom, Sophomore, Mililani High School
  • Shayna Savidge, Sophomore, Island Pacific Academy

The 2010 ISA Gala will be held on April 16, 2010, 5:45 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at the Farrington High School Auditorium, 1564 N. King Street, Honolulu, Hawaii. Scheduled to participate in this year's program are Hawaii Attorney General Mark Bennett, Honolulu Prosecuting Attorney Peter Carlisle, U.S. Attorney Florence Nakakuni, Frank De Lima (Comedian), “Lina Girl” (KCCN Radio), Steve Uyemura (KGMB-9), Grace Lee (KGMB-9), and Dog and Beth Chapman (“Dog the Bounty Hunter”/A&E TV). Also performing will be 40 dancers from 24/7 Danceforce, including champion dance crew Six-Pack, and vocalist Jocelyn Palola. Award-winning magician and personality Kaulana will serve as the event’s host and emcee.

Winning videos will be distributed through a variety of media outlets throughout the summer 2010, including: NatGeo, MTV, VH1, KGMB-9, Discovery, A&E, Disney Channel, ABC Family, Nickelodeon, Spike, Comedy Central, CNN, Fox News, YouTube, MySpace, USphere, and others.
