Listen with Windows Media Player
Also available on iTunes

Mr. Schiff: In 2007 a South Florida company called the FBI to report a computer intrusion. FBI agent Jeff Luders and his partner interviewed company officials right away.

Mr. Luders: "And that’s when we determined that there was a potential that an IP address that was here, local, to the Miami , Dade area, was involved in this computer intrusion.”

Mr. Schiff: This turned out to be an expensive computer crime. Luders says it cost the firm more than $30,000.

Mr. Luders: "They were down for several days; of course some aspects of the business were down a little bit longer.”

Mr. Schiff: A former worker at the company was the guilty party. Luders says he logged into the company’s network from his home in South Florida .

Mr. Luders: "While he was inside the network, he, in essence, deleted all the user names and passwords. So, nobody else could get into any of the servers or any of the network applications. Basically he shut everything down.”

Mr. Schiff: The subject pleaded guilty to two counts of computer fraud and was sentenced to a year in prison, three years probation and ordered to pay back $31,000. I’m Neal Schiff of the Bureau, and that’s the FBI’s Closed Case of the Week.”
