POSITION: The FBI's Behavioral Science Unit is offering full-time unpaid internships to qualifying students during Spring and Fall semesters. The Behavioral Science Unit is (BSU) located at the FBI Academy on the Marine Corps Base at Quantico, Virginia.

DUTIES: The duties will vary in accordance with the needs of the Behavioral Science Unit and the skills and interests of the student. Generally, duties could involve literature searches and preparing annotated bibliographies or summaries of pertinent articles; assisting in analysis and reporting of data collected in various research projects [e.g., serial arson, homicide, post-traumatic stress disorder, serial rape, sexual sadism]; assisting in special crime analysis projects, such as researching various aspects of crime and criminal behavior [e.g., crime trends, serial crimes, domestic violence]; developing and extending resource materials for the Behavioral Science Unit in topical areas such as hate crimes, gang violence or counterterrorism, to name a few. Applicants should be aware that subject matter involved is often graphic and violent.

QUALIFICATIONS: The student should be majoring in criminal justice or a related field (such as sociology or psychology); however, other majors may be considered on a case-by-case basis. The student must have at least a college junior standing, be enrolled at least half-time, and have a minimum GPA of 3.0. Some experience with microcomputers is desirable. Most written products required of the intern will be produced in WordPerfect or Word. Proficient writing skills and analytical abilities are necessary. The student must be a U.S. citizen and able to provide their own transportation and lodging. The student must be able to qualify under FBI standards pertaining to the use of illegal drugs and must successfully pass a polygraph and drug test as part of the background investigation. This also requires the applicant to be fingerprinted and complete a comprehensive background information questionnaire. Final selections will be contingent upon a successful background investigation by the FBI.

HOURS: The working hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday - Friday. Interns will be expected to work 40 hours a week. The internship starts the first week in September for the Fall program and the second week in January for the Spring program. The program is a minimum of 14 weeks.

A letter of faculty sponsorship from your college or university
A 1-2 page essay indicating background, interests, goals, and reasons for wanting to participate in program
A resume
1-2 recommendations from a departmental faculty member within your major
Transcripts of college credits earned (original copy; include all academic years)
Copy of a college term paper or other writing sample written by the applicant
SF-86 application form (available from www.OPM.gov or writing to Mrs. Laskiewicz - see below)
Applicants must include two appropriate photos with their names and date on the back.

NOTE: Interviews for finalists are held at the FBI Academy. Transportation costs for such an interview will be borne by the applicant.
