Native American Pleads Guilty to Assaulting and Attempting to Murder a 2-Year-Old Child

David Andrew Delacruz-Slavik, 28, an Indian from Mount Pleasant, pled guilty today in federal court in Bay City, Michigan for attempt to commit murder and assault resulting in serious bodily injury against a child, United States Attorney Barbara L. McQuade announced today.

McQuade was joined in the announcement by Special Agent in Charge, Andrew G. Arena, Federal Bureau of Investigation.

During the incident that on October 30, 2009, Slavik strangled, bit, and repeatedly punched the 2-year-old victim, which caused a stroke and other life threatening injuries. The assault occurred on the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Reservation in Isabella County, Michigan less than two months after Slavik was sentenced for the crime of child abuse in the second degree in Bay County for fracturing the same victim’s skull. The sentencing date has not bet set but will be in front of United States District Judge Thomas L. Ludington. Slavik faces a mandatory minimum of 10 years and up to life in prison.

The case was investigated by the Isabella County Sheriff’s Department and special agents of the FBI. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Roy Kranz.
