GRAND RAPIDS, MI—Carlton Termaine Roman, age 29, of Benton Harbor, was sentenced to nearly 10 years in federal prison following his conviction for armed bank robbery and other federal charges, U.S. Attorney Donald A. Davis announced today. In addition to his prison sentence, Roman was ordered to serve five years of supervised release. Roman was sentenced by the Hon. Robert J. Jonker, United States District Judge in Grand Rapids.
On November 6, 2008, Roman entered a Fifth Third Bank in Benton Harbor, Michigan armed with a loaded .32 caliber revolver. Roman demanded money from a teller and threatened to kill the teller and others if she did not comply. Upon receiving a sum of money, Roman fled the bank but was apprehended shortly thereafter by responding officers. Police recovered the firearm and cash from Roman’s pockets, and Roman was positively identified by the teller and a customer who was inside of the bank at the time of the robbery. Roman–who was on state parole for armed robbery at the time of the incident–pled guilty to armed bank robbery, carrying a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence, and being a felon in possession of a firearm.
U.S. Attorney Donald A. Davis praised the coordinated investigative efforts of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office, and the Benton Township Police Department. This case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Christopher O’Connor.
