Glenwood Springs Bank Robber Sentenced to Federal Prison

DENVER—United States Attorney David Gaouette and FBI Denver Division Special Agent in Charge James Davis announced that Jeffrey David Smith, age 28, of Glenwood Springs, Colorado, was sentenced yesterday by U.S. District Court Judge Robert E. Blackburn to serve 84 months (seven years) in federal prison for bank robbery. Following his prison term, Smith is to spend three years on supervised release. Judge Blackburn also ordered the defendant to pay $3,200 in restitution to the bank he robbed. Smith appeared in custody, and was remanded at the conclusion of the hearing.

Jeffrey David Smith was first charged by Criminal Complaint on December 24, 2008. He was indicted by a federal grand jury in Denver on April 23, 2009. He pled guilty before Judge Blackburn on June 25, 2009. He was sentenced yesterday, September 2, 2009.

According to the stipulated facts contained in the defendant’s plea agreement, on December 15, 2008, Smith entered the Alpine Bank branch located at 50891 Highway 6, in Glenwood Springs, Colorado, wearing a hooded sweatshirt with the hood up and a skull cap on his head to hide his identity. He went to the service desk, where he wrote out a note. He then handed to the note to the teller, while raising his sweatshirt to reveal what appeared to be a handgun, in his waistband. The teller complied with the note. Smith then left the bank. Bank employees were later were able to identify Smith from a photographic lineup. Investigators and agents tracked the defendant to Las Vegas, where he was arrested by local authorities. During a search of his hotel room a BB pistol matching the teller’s description of the firearm was found.

This case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Glenwood Springs Police Department, and the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office, with assistance from the Las Vegas Police Department and the Colorado State Division of Parole.

Smith was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Wyatt Angelo.
