Federal Inmate in Estill Charged for Weapon

COLUMBIA, SC—United States Attorney William N. Nettles stated today that Juan Verdusco-Macias, age 32, a federal inmate at the Federal Correctional Institution in Estill, South Carolina, was indicted for possession of a weapon inside the facility. Prison officials allegedly found a knife in Verdusco-Macias’ gym bag during a random search.
Mr. Nettles stated the maximum penalty Verdusco-Macias could receive is a fine of $250,000 and imprisonment for five years, to be served consecutive to the sentence he is currently serving, a 216-month sentence for possession with intent to distribute cocaine.
Mr. Nettles stated that the case was investigated by agents of the FBI and officials from the Bureau of Prisons, and that he has assigned the case to Assistant United States Attorney Nick Bianchi of the Charleston office for prosecution.
The United States Attorney stated that all charges in this Indictment are merely accusations and that all defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
