Olmsted Township, Ohio Man Charged in Connection with Stolen Construction Equipment, Trailers, and a Boat

U.S. Attorney’s Office January 21, 2011
  • Northern District of Ohio (216) 622-3600

A federal grand jury has returned an indictment against Edward J. Scholtz, age 36, of Olmsted Township, Ohio, in connection with stolen construction equipment, trailers, and a 2001 33-foot cigarette boat, Steven M. Dettelbach, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio, announced today.

Scholtz was arrested on Jan. 14. The seven-count indictment charges that Scholtz conspired with others to steal items in the southeastern United States, primarily in Georgia. Scholtz then transported the items to Ohio, where he would use or sell them, according to the indictment.

To conceal the fact that the items were stolen, several of the items were repainted, had decals replaced, and/or had identification numbers changed or removed, according to the indictment.

If convicted, the sentence in this case will be determined by the court after consideration of the advisory Federal Sentencing Guidelines which depend upon a number of factors unique to each case, including the defendant’s prior criminal record, if any, the defendant’s role in the offenses and the unique characteristics of the violations. In all cases the sentence will not exceed the statutory maximum and in most cases it will be less than the maximum.

The case was presented to the grand jury by Assistant United States Attorney Daniel J. Riedl following an investigation by the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Lorain County Sheriff’s Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation, with assistance from the National Insurance Crime Bureau.

An indictment is not evidence of guilt. A defendant is entitled to a fair trial in which it will be the government’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
