Canton Resident Sentenced for Two Bank Robberies

U.S. Attorney’s Office January 08, 2010
  • Northern District of Ohio (216) 622-3600

Steven M. Dettelbach, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio, today announced that 50-year-old Mark Joy, of Canton, Ohio, has been sentenced to a term of 115 months in prison for committing two bank robberies in Canton, Ohio.

The Canton City Police and Canton office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation began investigating Joy following a robbery at the Stark Federal Credit Union on March 10, 2009. Joy entered the credit union on that day and presented a note demanding money and stating that he had a gun. Tellers complied with his demands and Joy made off with $2,200.

On May 19, 2009, Joy again entered the credit union, this time wearing a mask and brandishing a toy gun painted to look real. Joy again demanded money from the tellers and successfully stole approximately $4,160.

The Canton Police and FBI, following up on a series of leads, ultimately apprehended Joy on May 26, 2009. A federal grand jury indicted Joy on June 23, 2009 for bank robbery and armed bank robbery. He plead guilty to the charges on October 13, 2009 and was sentenced by United States District Court Judge Christopher A. Boyko on January 7, 2010. After being released from prison, Joy will be required to pay restitution to the credit union and to report to a probation officer for five years.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney David Toepfer.
