Burnham Man Charged with Robbing Naperville Bank

An individual arrested shortly after a robbery of a Naperville bank has been charged in federal court in connection with that robbery. The arrest and charge were announced today by Robert J. Holley, Special Agent in Charge of the Chicago Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and Zachary T. Fardon, U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois.

Kevin A. Johnson, 30, of 14300 block of Bensley Avenue in Burnham, was taken into custody without incident at his place of employment in Naperville. He was charged in a criminal complaint filed today in U.S. District Court with one count of bank robbery, a felony offense. Johnson appeared earlier today before a U.S. Magistrate Judge and was ordered held until his next court appearance, which is scheduled for February 20, 2014, at 3:00 p.m.

According to the complaint, Johnson entered the PNC Bank branch located at 9 East Ogden in Naperville just after 2:30 p.m. yesterday and demanded money from a teller. Johnson also allegedly threatened to shoot the teller if the teller did not comply with his demands and kept his right hand in his coat pocket, which led the teller to believe Johnson had a weapon.

Although not charged, the complaint also states that Johnson carried out a robbery at an American Chartered Bank at 2205 Butterfield Road in Downers Grove on January 17, 2014. Following that robbery, an individual reported to law enforcement that a car later determined to be registered to Johnson was parked in a residential driveway at about the same time as the robbery. The vehicle information and additional investigation led to the identification of Johnson and his arrest yesterday.

If convicted of the charge filed against him, Johnson faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison.

Mr. Holley thanked the police departments of Downers Grove and Naperville for their assistance in the investigation of the robberies and the arrest of Johnson.

The public is reminded that a complaint is not evidence of guilt and that all defendants in a criminal case are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
