Activity in Federal Court – Chicago

HAMMOND, IN—The United States Attorney’s Office announced that a grand jury sitting in the Northern District of Illinois returned the following indictment on February 3, 2010:

Frank Caira, 39, of Downers Grove, Illinois, and Jack Mann, 41, of Naperville, Illinois, were charged by indictment with conspiracy to kill or attempt to kill an officer of the United States. In this case, the indictment alleges that the intended victims were an Assistant United States Attorney and a Drug Enforcement Administration Special Agent. This indictment is related to criminal complaints filed against Caira and Mann on January 14, 2010 in the Northern District of Illinois.

This case was investigated jointly by the Chicago Federal Bureau of Investigation Violent Crimes Task Force and the United States Marshals Service Northern Illinois Threat Assessment Task Force. This case is being prosecuted by the United States Attorney’s Office of the Northern District of Indiana.

The United States Attorney’s Office emphasized that an Indictment is merely an allegation and that all persons charged are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty in court.

The specific sentence in each case to be imposed upon conviction will be determined by the judge after a consideration of federal sentencing statutes and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines.
