Public’s Help Sought in Search for Darien Bank Robbers

FBI Chicago March 20, 2009
  • Special Agent Garrett Croon (312) 829-1199

Robert D. Grant, Special Agent-in-Charge of the Chicago office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) was joined today by Robert J. Pavelchik, Chief of the Darien, Illinois Police Department (DPD) in asking for the public’s help in identifying the individuals depicted in the attached wanted flyer, who are responsible for the March 11th attempted “take-over” robbery of the West Suburban Bank branch, located at 8001 South Cass Avenue in Darien.

According to witnesses, the robbers gained entry to the bank just after the lobby closed for the day at 6:00 p.m. They used a metal tool, possibly a hammer, to break out a large plate glass window near the bank’s drive-up lanes and entered into a storage room. They then stepped into the bank’s lobby, brandishing handguns and ordering bank employees to the ground. One of the robbers then stood guard over the employees while the second robber, who was carrying a blue plastic tub, attempted to access the teller’s work area. Discovering that an entry door to this part of the bank was locked and unable to gain access, the robbers then fled the bank empty handed.

The two robbers made their escape in a beige colored minivan, which was waiting in the bank’s drive-up lanes. It was not determined if a third individual was driving the minivan, which was found abandoned less than a mile away. Subsequent investigation determined that the minivan had been reported stolen from an automotive dealership in Countryside, Illinois about one week earlier.

No other robberies have been linked to these individuals, who should both be considered Armed and Dangerous.

Limited physical descriptions of the robbers were obtained, as they were both wearing a black ski mask and matching yellow construction hats. Both robbers are believed to be white/males, age unknown, 6’ 0”—6’ 2” tall, with medium builds.

This case is being investigated jointly by the Chicago FBI and the Darien Police Department.

Anyone recognizing these individuals or having any information about this attempted robbery is asked to call the Chicago FBI at (312) 421-6700.
