Former Deputy Sheriff Pleads Guilty to Civil Rights Violations

RALEIGH—United States Attorney Thomas G. Walker announced that in federal court yesterday ROBERT LEVERN BAKER, JR., 38, pled guilty before Senior United State District Judge W. Earl Britt to three counts of deprivation of civil rights under the color of law, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 242.
A criminal information was filed on May 19, 2011, charging BAKER, who had been employed as a deputy sheriff by the Pamlico County Sheriff’s Office, with the three counts.
At sentencing, scheduled for December 5, 2011, BAKER, who is a resident of Arapahoe, North Carolina, faces up to one year imprisonment followed by one year of supervised release and a fine of up to $100,000, for each count. Investigation of this case was conducted by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant United States Attorney John Bennett is serving as prosecutor for the government.
