Bank Robber Pleads Guilty

U.S. Attorney’s Office June 15, 2009
  • Eastern District of North Carolina (919) 856-4530

RALEIGH, NC—United States Attorney George E.B. Holding announced that in federal court today SAYFRIED SINCLAIR, 32, of Lumberton, North Carolina, pled guilty before United States District Judge Terrence W. Boyle, to bank robbery, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 2113(a) and (d), which carries a maximum penalty of up to 25 years imprisonment followed by five years of supervised release and a fine of up to $250,000. SINCLAIR has also agreed, as stipulated in the Plea Agreement, to make restitution to any victim in whatever amount specified by the Court.

SINCLAIR was charged by Criminal Indictment on December 18, 2008. On October 3, 2008, after waiting in line at the First South Bank in Lumberton, North Carolina, SINCLAIR walked up to the teller, and pointing a semi-automatic handgun, demanded, “Give me all you have.” Complying with the demand, the teller gave SINCLAIR approximately $2,093 in cash along with bait money. SINCLAIR fled the bank leaving behind an envelope. Following information obtained from the contents of the envelope and from the surveillance video, law enforcement traced SINCLAIR to the robbery.

Mr. Holding commented, “Armed robbery is a heinous crime that reverberates throughout the community. We are working diligently to bring individuals who commit these crimes to justice.”

Investigation of the case was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Lumberton Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney William Gilmore served as prosecutor for the government.
