CHARLOTTE, NC—Fugitive U.S. Marine Corps Corporal Cesar Armando Laurean will be extradited from Mexico to the United States on April 17, 2009.  Laurean was captured in central Mexico in April 2008 after fleeing the United States in January 2008.

Onslow County Sheriff’s Office investigators suspect Laurean in the homicide of 20-year-old USMC Lance Corporal Maria Lauterbach, who was eight months pregnant at the time of her death.  The Onslow County Sheriff’s Office asked the FBI for help locating Laurean when he disappeared on January 12, 2008.  He was charged federally with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution (UFAP) in the Eastern District of North Carolina, and a federal warrant was issued for his arrest.

“Now that Cesar Laurean is coming back to the US, Onslow County can move forward with prosecution.  He can no longer avoid answering the charges against him,” said Owen Harris, Special Agent in Charge of the Charlotte Division of the FBI.  “I want to thank everyone who dedicated their time and energy to helping resolve this investigation.”

The FBI, the U.S. Department of Justice Office of International Affairs, Onslow County Sheriff’s Office, North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, Naval Criminal Investigative Service, the U.S. Marshals Service, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Bureau of Diplomatic Security, Interpol and the Mexican government all worked together to locate, arrest and extradite Laurean.
