Youngsville Resident Sentenced 150 Months for Armed Bank Robbery

NEW BERN, NC—United States Attorney George E.B. Holding announced that in federal court yesterday Chief United States District Judge Louise W. Flanagan sentenced DESMOND LAMONT GARRETT, 29, of Youngsville, North Carolina, to 150 months’ imprisonment.
A Federal Grand Jury returned a Criminal Indictment on June 11, 2008. On October 7, 2008, GARRETT pled guilty to armed bank robbery. On April 16, 2008, GARRETT robbed the Coastal Federal Credit Union in Cary, North Carolina, of $12,384 by threatening bank employees with an air soft gun. He fled the scene with another individual. GARRETT ran out of gas within miles of the scene of the robbery and was captured while attempting to refuel the car.
Mr. Holding stated, “The sentence handed down by Judge Flanagan is just. To have a gun pointed at you, whether it be real or toy, is a traumatic experience and will not be tolerated in this district. The bank employees who were threatened acted in a brave and courageous manner and we applaud their fast action as well as those of the investigators.”
Investigation of the case was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Cary Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney William Gilmore served as prosecutor for the government.
