Mashpee Brothers Indicted for Armed Bank Robbery

BOSTON, MA—Two Mashpee brothers were charged in federal court with the armed bank robbery of the Rockland Trust in Bourne, MA.

United States Attorney Carmen M. Ortiz and Warren T. Bamford, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation – Boston Field Division, announced that TRAVIS BUCHANAN and SPRAGUE BUCHANAN, both of Mashpee, were charged with armed bank robbery.

The Indictment alleges that on November 17, 2009, SPRAGUE BUCHANAN, armed with a dangerous weapon, entered the Rockland Trust located on Clay Pond Road in Bourne. It is alleged that, once inside, SPRAGUE BUCHANAN brandished an item, which resembled a hand gun, and demanded money from the teller. The teller complied with BUCHANAN’s demands and he fled from the bank. It is further alleged that his twin brother, TRAVIS BUCHANAN, was waiting for him in a neighboring parking lot. SPRAGUE BUCHANAN entered the vehicle and the two fled from the scene. They were later arrested in Mashpee with the money and the weapon.

If convicted on these charges, TRAVIS BUCHANAN and SPRAGUE BUCHANAN each face 25 years' imprisonment and a fine of up to $250,000, to be followed by five years of supervised release.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Bourne and Mashpee Police Departments, and the Barnstable County District Attorney’s Office. It is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Kenneth G. Shine of Ortiz's Major Crime Unit.

The details contained in the Indictment are allegations. The defendants are presumed to be innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
