Stoughton Police Officer Pleads Guilty to Making False Statements in Public Corruption Investigation

BOSTON, MA—A Stoughton police officer who recently resigned pleaded guilty in federal court today to making false statements to the FBI in an ongoing public corruption matter.

United States Attorney Carmen M. Ortiz and Warren T. Bamford, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigations - Boston Field Division, announced that ARLINDO ROMEIRO, age 37, of Stoughton, who has resigned from the Stoughton police department, pleaded guilty to making false statements and representations to the FBI regarding an ongoing corruption investigation. The Information alleges that ROMEIRO made these false statements and representations during the course of an interview on July 13, 2009.

“False statements by a police officer are unacceptable and will be prosecuted if they arise in the course of a federal investigation. It is critically important to uphold the integrity of our criminal justice system,” stated U.S. Attorney Ortiz.

The Honorable Patti B. Saris scheduled sentencing for April 8, 2010. ROMEIRO faces maximum penalties of up to five years' imprisonment, three years' supervised release and a $250,000 fine.

This case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Brian T. Kelly, Chief of Ortiz’s Public Corruption Unit.
