Manchester Man Pleads Guilty to Bank Robbery

U.S. Attorney’s Office January 12, 2009
  • District of New Hampshire (603) 225-1552

CONCORD, NH—United States Attorney for the District of New Hampshire Tom Colantuono, FBI Special Agent in Charge Warren Bamford, and Windham Police Chief Gerald Lewis today announced that Matthew Ireland, 30, formerly of Manchester, New Hampshire, pleaded guilty today in the United States District Court in Concord to committing the October 7, 2008 robbery of the Citizens Bank, 115 Indian Rock Road, in Windham. A sentencing hearing has been scheduled for April 13, 2009 at 1:30 p.m.

Ireland admitted that he entered the bank on October 7, 2008 and demanded money from the teller using a note written on the back of a savings withdrawal form. A bank employee gave Ireland a sum of United States currency and Ireland was last observed leaving the area of the bank on foot. Ireland's image was captured by the bank security system and distributed through the local media. The police eventually obtained information from a number of sources that led to Ireland's arrest and conviction.

Ireland faces a statutory maximum sentence of 20 years imprisonment. Under the advisory sentencing guidelines used in federal court, Ireland's sentence is likely to be less than 20 years. After serving a period in prison, Ireland will be placed on supervised release where his behavior will be monitored by the United States Probation and Pretrial Services Office.

U.S. Attorney Tom Colantuono stated: "Bank robberies, including those where no firearm is used, present a grave risk of serious injury to bank employees, customers, innocent bystanders and law enforcement. This office will continue to aggressively prosecute perpetrators of this crime so that those who commit these robberies are caught and punished for this dangerous activity."

The Windham Police Department and the FBI investigated this case.
