Massachusetts Man is Sentenced for a String of Robberies in Rhode Island

U.S. Attorney’s Office January 09, 2009
  • District of Rhode Island (401) 709-5000

A federal judge today sentenced David R. Cahill to 63 months in prison for a string of robberies he committed at banks and drug stores in Rhode Island.

United States Attorney Robert Clark Corrente announced the sentence, which Chief U.S. District Court Judge Mary M. Lisi imposed in U.S. District Court, Providence. Judge Lisi also ordered Cahill, 32, to pay a total of $71,230 restitution to the robbery victims.

In August, Cahill pleaded guilty to seven counts of robbery—two at banks for cash and five at drug stores, where he took oxycodone after brandishing what appeared to be a handgun.

At the plea hearing, Assistant U.S. Attorney Zechariah Chafee said the government could prove that Cahill committed the following robberies:

  • Bank of America on Bald Hill Road, Warwick on May 29 2007, where he handed a teller a threatening note and took $7,538;
  • Bank of America on Washington Highway Lincoln, on June 7, 2007, where he took $2,361 via a threatening note;
  • Brooks Pharmacy on Mineral Spring Avenue, North Providence on June 16, 2007, where he stole oxycodone after brandishing a gun that later turned out to be a realistic looking BB pistol;
  • CVS Pharmacy on Park Avenue, Cranston on June 22, 2007, where he took oxycodone at gunpoint;
  • The same CVS Pharmacy on Park Avenue on December 12, 2007, where he again obtained oxycodone at gunpoint;
  • CVS Pharmacy on Reservoir Avenue, Cranston, on two occasions—January 6, 2008 and February 12, 2008 where he took oxycodone at gunpoint;

FBI SWAT arrested Cahill at his home in Mendon, Massachusetts last April following an investigation by law enforcement agencies in the communities where the robberies occurred. He confessed to most of the robberies and evidence linked him to others. Cahill also confessed to additional robberies committed at a drug store in Bellingham, Massachusetts and a bank in Groton, Connecticut.

The following agencies investigated the various robberies: the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Woonsocket Police, Cranston Police, North Providence Police, Lincoln Police, Warwick Police, Rhode Island State Police, Massachusetts State Police, Bellingham, Mendon, and Bourne, Massachusetts Police, and Groton, Connecticut Police.
