BIRMINGHAM—A federal grand jury today indicted MAXIE DOYAL EVANS for the armed robbery of a Huntsville bank in June, announced U.S. Attorney Joyce White Vance and FBI Special Agent in Charge Patrick J. Maley.
Evans, 32, of Union Grove, was charged in a two-count indictment filed in U. S. District Court in Birmingham.
Count One of the indictment charges Evans with the June 24, robbery of a Wachovia Bank on South Memorial Parkway in Huntsville. The indictment alleges about $821 was taken during the robbery. Count Two of the indictment charges Evans with using a gun during the robbery.
If convicted of these charges, the defendant faces a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison on the bank robbery charge and a minimum sentence of five years on the gun charge, to be served consecutively to any sentence imposed on the robbery count. Both charges carry a fine of $250,000.
“Bank robberies, especially those where the offender carries a gun, are not just crimes against financial institutions, they are violent crimes that terrify the bank employees and other people trapped inside the bank,” Vance said. “Such violent offenses will be met with swift prosecution.”
The robbery was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Mary Stuart Burrell is prosecuting the case.
Members of the public are reminded that the indictment contains only charges. A defendant is presumed innocent of the charges and it will be the government’s burden to prove a defendant’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt at trial.
