Birmingham Man Sentenced to 189 Months on Bank Robbery Charges

U.S. Attorney’s Office June 25, 2009
  • Northern District of Alabama (205) 244-2001

BIRMINGHAM, AL—United States District Court Judge L. Scott Coogler sentenced Qunitus Montea Woods, on June 24, 2009, to 189 months in federal prison. Woods, 32, of Birmingham, Alabama, was previously indicted by a federal grand jury on multiple counts of bank robbery, armed bank robbery, use of a firearm during an armed bank robbery, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. He pled guilty to these charges on March 26, 2009. Following his release from prison, Woods will be placed on supervised release for a period of five years. He has been ordered to make restitution to Compass Bank in the amount of $5,036.

The plea agreement reflects that on December 1, 2008, at approximately 12:21 p.m., Woods entered the Compass Bank located at 1694 Montclair Road. He passed the bank teller a threatening note demanding money and showed her a silver handgun, later identified as a Taurus .40 caliber pistol, that he had tucked into his pants. After the teller placed her money drawer on the front counter, Woods stuffed the money into his pants and walked out the door. Witnesses on the scene called 911 and aided the Birmingham Police Department in their apprehension of Woods by following him as he left the bank’s parking lot. The police quickly apprehended Woods a short distance from the bank.

Later that same day Woods confessed to the armed bank robbery and to attempting to rob the same bank on November 9, 2007. Woods further confessed that on October 5, 2007, and on August 16, 2008, he robbed the Compass Bank located at 9208 Parkway East in Birmingham.

Woods also has a prior robbery conviction.

This matter was investigated by Special Agent William K. Bryan with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and by Task Force Officer Ed Hull with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and in conjunction with the City of Birmingham Police Department. Special Assistant United States Attorney Amy E. DeMarco prosecuted this matter on behalf of the United States.
