Amerithrax Investigation

Letter being extracted from envelopeSoon after the terrorist attacks of 9/11/01, letters laced with anthrax began appearing in the U.S. mails. Five Americans were killed—and the nation terrorized—in what became the worst biological attacks in U.S. history.

The ensuing investigation by the FBI and its partners—code-named “Amerithrax”—has been one of the largest and most complex in the history of law enforcement. Today, we remain determined to solve the case. We’ve conducted more than 9,100 interviews and issued some 6,100 subpoenas. Nineteen FBI agents, working with eight inspectors from the U.S. Postal Service, continue to pursue each and every lead aggressively.

Biohazard symbolAt the same time, the scientific advances gained from this case are unprecedented and have greatly strengthened the nation’s ability to prepare for—and investigate—biological attacks. Since the first anthrax mailing, investigators have worked hand in hand with the scientific community both to solve this case and to be better positioned in the event of a future attack.

You can help! Please submit a tip electronically or contact your nearest FBI office if you have information regarding the Amerithrax investigation.
