Anchorage Prisoner Convicted of Sexual Abuse of Other Prisoners

ANCHORAGE—United States Attorney Karen L. Loeffler announced today that an Anchorage prisoner was convicted in federal court in Anchorage of 12 counts of aggravated sexual abuse, sexual abuse, and abusive sexual contact.

On June 29, 2011, Sabil Mujahid, 54, was convicted by a federal jury before Senior United States District Judge H. Russel Holland.

All of the victims were state inmates at the Anchorage Correctional Center at the time Mujahid sexually assaulted them between May 2009 and May 2010. Evidence at the trial established that Mujahid targeted younger, smaller men. All of the victims are Alaska Natives.

The jury found that Mujahid used force, threatened, and placed in fear three victims, causing them to engage in sexual acts and sexual contact. The jury acquitted Mujahid on one count and could not unanimously agree on four additional counts of aggravated sexual abuse and sexual abuse involving a fourth victim.

Mujahid is currently serving a 10-year sentence for his conviction of being a felon in possession of a firearm, and is also awaiting an October 2011 jury trial on sex trafficking charges.

Mujahid faces a maximum sentence of life in prison on nine of the counts, a maximum sentence of 10 years on one count and a three-year maximum on two other counts. No date has been set for sentencing.
