Ramah Navajo Man Sentenced to Prison for Federal Assault Conviction

ALBUQUERQUE—Yesterday in federal court, a federal judge sentenced Kerley K. Biggs, 22, to a 46 month prison sentence for his assault with a deadly weapon conviction. Biggs, an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation who resides in Ramah, New Mexico, will be on supervised release for three years after he completes his prison sentence.

On September 27, 2011, Biggs was indicted and charged with assault with a dangerous weapon and assault resulting in serious bodily injury. According to the indictment, the assault occurred on September 25, 2010, on the Navajo Indian Reservation in Cibola County, New Mexico.

On January 24, 2012, Biggs plead guilty to count one of the indictment and admitted assaulting another Navajo man by beating him about the head and face with a metal expandable baton at Biggs’ residence in Ramah/ As a result of the assault, the victim required medical treatment for numerous injuries to his head, left cheek, and left eye. The victim sustained a significant wound to the back of his head that required 12 staples to repair.

U.S. Attorney Kenneth J. Gonzales thanked the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Navajo Nation Department of Public SafetyRamah Navajo Division, who investigated the case; and Assistant U.S. Attorney Paul H. Spiers, who prosecuted the case.
