Laguna Pueblo Man Sentenced to 97 Months’ Imprisonment for Federal Child Sex Abuse Conviction

U.S. Attorney’s Office May 17, 2011
  • District of New Mexico (505) 346-7274

ALBUQUERQUE—This morning in federal court in Albuquerque, Raymond Joseph Martin, 62, an enrolled member of the Pueblo of Laguna, was sentenced to a 97-month term of imprisonment to be followed by 10 years of supervised release for sexually abusing a child under the age of 12. The court also ordered Martin to pay $1,011.13 in restitution. Martin will be required to register as a sex offender after he completes his prison sentence.

United States Attorney Kenneth J. Gonzales said that Martin has been in federal custody since February 3, 2011 when he pleaded guilty to count one of a three-count indictment charging him with knowingly engaging in sexual contact with a child who had not attained the age of 12 by touching the child’s genitalia. At the conclusion of the sentencing hearing, the court dismissed the remaining counts of the indictment under the terms of Martin’s plea agreement.

According to the criminal complaint filed in the case, on February 12, 2010, the Pueblo of Laguna Police Department (LPD) initiated an investigation into allegations that Martin had sexually abused his 10-year-old granddaughter within the boundaries of the Pueblo of Laguna and referred the investigation to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) on February 23, 2010. The complaint alleges that during a safe-house interview on March 4, 2010, the granddaughter disclosed that Martin had touched her genitals on numerous occasions. During an interview with FBI agents on April 2, 2010, Martin admitted touching his granddaughter’s genitals, both directly and through her clothing, on several occasions when the child was 8 to 10 years old. In his plea agreement, Martin admitted that, between December 1, 2008 and December 31, 2008, he knowingly engaged in sexual contact with a child who had not attained the age of 12.

This case was investigated by the FBI with the assistance of the LPD, and was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Shana B. Long.
