  • District of New Mexico (505) 346-7274

ALBUQUERQUE—U.S. Attorney Kenneth J. Gonzales announced that, this afternoon in federal court, David Mota, 22, of Albuquerque, was sentenced to a 102-month term of imprisonment for his conviction on armed bank robbery and firearms charges. Mota will be on supervised release for three years after completing his prison sentence. Mota also was ordered to pay restitution to the bank that was the victim of his crimes.

Mota was charged in a four-count indictment with: (1) the January 22, 2010 armed robbery of the First Community Bank branch located at 5001 Montgomery in Albuquerque; (2) using a firearm during the January 22, 2010 bank robbery; (3) the February 22, 2010 armed robbery of the Bank of the West branch located at 5228 Central Avenue SW in Albuquerque; and (4) using a firearm during the February 22, 2010 bank robbery.

On May 19, 2011, Mota pled guilty to counts three and four of the indictment and admitted robbing the Bank of the West at gunpoint on February 22, 2010. He admitted entering the bank, approaching a bank teller, and pointing a handgun at her. When another bank employee attempted to flee from the counter area, Mota responded by brandishing the handgun at another employee and demanding that everyone remain in place by saying, “Don’t move! Nobody move!” Mota then demanded and obtained money from a bank teller and fled from the bank.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Albuquerque Police Department and was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Roberto D. Ortega.
