INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY


The FBI has made modernization of its information technology (IT) a priority because the ability to assemble, analyze and disseminate information both internally and with other intelligence and law enforcement agencies is essential to our success in the war on terrorism.

Coordinated/Strategic Management of IT

  • Centralized leadership under Chief Information Officer (CIO)
  • Strategic IT Plan
  • Baseline Enterprise Architecture
  • "Life cycle" management of IT projects, with regular reviews at each stage
  • Performance based IT contracts with specific milestones related to cost, schedule, and performance

IT Infrastructure Upgrades

  • High-speed, secure network enables personnel around the country to share data, including audio, video and image files
  • Deployed nearly 30,000 new desktop computers with modern software applications 3,700 printers, 1,600 scanners, 465 servers and 1400 routers
  • Contract awarded to Lockheed Martin to develop Sentinel, an information management system that will improve how the FBI manages its investigative, administrative and intelligence information and workflow.
  • Ensuring the success of Sentinel with: (1) well-documented requirements; (2) a disciplined program management process; (3) a phased roll out process; and (4) and broad training strategy

New Investigative/Information Sharing Capabilities

  • Top Secret/Sensitive Compartmented Information Operational Network (SCION)
  • Top Secret Video Teleconferencing Network
  • SECRET level connectivity to the Intelligence and Homeland Security Communities via the Department of Defense's SECRET Internet Protocol Router Network (SIPERNET).
  • Investigative Data Warehouse (IDW) now provides users with a single access point to more than 47 sources of counterterrorism data, including information from FBI files, other government agencies, and open sources. "Alert capability" automatically notifies users when a new document is uploaded that meets their search criteria.
  • Guardian, a web-based counterterrorism threat and suspicious activity management application, allows users to enter, assign, and manage terrorism threats and suspicious activities in a paperless environment, and it allows all field offices and JTTF members to view information simultaneously.
  • FBI Automated Messaging System (FAMS) provides users with the capability to send and receive critical organizational message traffic to any of the 40,000+ addresses on the Defense Messaging System (DMS).
  • FBI Intelligence Information Reports Dissemination System (FIDS), a web-based software application, allows all FBI personnel with access to the FBI's Intranet to create and disseminate standardized Intelligence Information Reports (IIRs) quickly and efficiently.
  • Law Enforcement Online (LEO) provides web-based communications to the law enforcement community to exchange information, conduct online education programs, and participate in topically focused dialog
  • Law Enforcement National Data Exchange (N-DEx) Regional Data Exchange (R-Dex) and will provide a nationwide capability to exchange data derived from incident and event reports
