On January 18, 2013, FBI public affairs staff from the Detroit Division participated in the GEAR UP/Martin Luther King, Jr. Day event sponsored by the University of Michigan-Dearborn and Oakland University. Volunteers from both universities attended the event—held at Michigan’s College of Business campus in Dearborn—which promoted understanding of diversity and encouraged working together. It was the largest GEAR UP/MLK Day event for the University of Michigan-Dearborn, attended by 120 multicultural students from at least five different public schools in Wayne and Oakland Counties. GEAR UP, or Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs, is a U.S. Department of Education grant program designed to increase the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in post-secondary education.
