The Richmond Division honors Mr. Sidney D. Townsend for his efforts as a community activist.

Mr. Townsend formally began his community involvement in 1996, when he became involved in a local neighborhood watch group. He later enrolled in the Senior Citizens’ Police Academy hosted by the Henrico County Police Division (HCPD). Upon graduation, he joined the Seniors and Law Enforcement Together organization in June 2001.

Mr. Townsend has been a long-time resident and positive community activist in the Confederate Heights neighborhood, serving as president of its Neighborhood Watch program and acting as a public voice for a challenged community reluctant to express itself though formal channels. He also serves as a liaison for the HCPD in addressing community concerns with the Richmond International Raceway and NASCAR management.

Mr. Townsend is an excellent model of civic leadership and positive activism for his community. He continues to be an agent for change through strong partnerships with other civic faith-based leaders along with local and state governmental agencies and elected officials.
